Meggernie Camp 2018: Scout hike

It's traditional at Meggernie now for the Scouts to be visitied by Dmitri the Russian Spy. Yet again he failed to land safely and crash landed in the hills, so we had to go and find him. After a bit of searching we did find him, his parachute and quickly helped him with his broken arm.

We found a great place by the river for lunch, cooking diablo toasties on the fire with soup.

On the way back one of our Scots slipped and twisted her ankle, the Scouts were quick to help, comforting her and keeping her warm, and then making a stretcher to carry her the mile home. Much to the Scouts amazement and disgust, it turned out that the ankle wasn't sprained and the leaders had played a trick on them and this was just an exercise. Perhaps the smile on the injured Scout's face should have been a give away...but it was great fun anyway. 

Meggernie Camp 2018: Tomahawks and Climbing

On the Sunday of Camp the Scouts occupied themselves with practising their tomahawk throwing and climbing skills. Maybe not surprisingly, tomahawk throwing is one of the Scouts favourite activities at Meggernie and, thanks to some expert tuition by Rab, some of the Scouts are now quite expert. Jake was King of the Tomahawks, with a fantsastic 11 out of 12 tomahawks in the target.

Climbing on the traversing wall is also great fun and Meggernie's wall is a bit tricky, but Mila, Fred, Alexander and Archie all managed to get to the end and honk the horn.

Meggernie Camp 2018: Campfire Talent Show

As well as our normal huge campfire with marshmallows on Saturday night, this year we had a Talent Show. The leaders weren't quite sure what to expect but were pleasantly surprised at the talent on show. The acts included joke telling, singing (traditional Scottish and original pieces), magic tricks, stories, riddles and fortune telling. Well done to all our performers.

Meggernie Camp 2018: Games

As well as all the planned activities at Meggernie, there was plenty of time for just running around. There were huge games of Last Man, a bit of giant Jenga and just seeing how many Scouts can fit on a tree trunk.
 

Meggernie Camp 2018

Our annual trip to Meggernie was a great success again this year, with about 40 Cubs and Scouts taking over one of the fields. We had loads of activities and plenty of time for running around, relaxing and of course lots of great food from our expert chefs. I'm sure we'll be back very soon.

Weeds

The Scouts' favourite game is probably weeds at the moment. It's a simple game but mainly ends up with everyone's shoes being strewn across the hall.

Scouts Expedition Challenge

Last weekend six of our Scouts set off to complete their expedition challenge. They had planned it all themselves and had given themselves a long walk to start things off, you can just see them reaching the top on the Conic Hill path if you look very closely in the photo below.

They set up their own camp, cooked all their own food and even managed to find and set up some geocaches on the way.

They're already planning their next trip.

Building Bridges

The new term started for the Scouts with some pioneering and building bridges across the mighty torrent that is the old mill race. This version of the bridge held the whole troop!

Viking rafts

A couple of weeks ago the Scouts were challenged to create mini viking fire rafts. They had to use just natural resources that they could find (except for a flint and steel for lighting the fire) to build a floating raft that would hold a mini-bonfire. As you can see, they were very successful...even if the odd foot/leg/whole scout got a bit wet in the attempt.
