Scouts - Outdoor Art

This week the Scouts tried their hand at something more creative. Inspired by Andy Goldsworthy, they used natural materials to create art outdoors.

Scouts conquer Dunmore

 

We are finally (nearly) back to normal and Scouts is meeting every week. We're trying to do as much outdoors and this week we went on a hike up Dunmore, just outside Fintry.

 

 

Beavers - end of summer term

 

The Beaver’s summer term finished with a games night and badge presentations. There were loads of great games but in the end the huge balloons took over most of the session.

Scouts (finally) finish their Expedition Challenge Badge

 

Twelve Scouts had planned to do their Expedition Challenge badge in March (2020) but global events meant plans had to change. Fifteen months of waiting later, we finally got the go-ahead to camp. 

After some great navigation on the hike from Old Drymen Road to Aberfoyle, they camped at Dounans Centre, together with 4,897,201 midges. Cooking in a cloud of midges is probably one of the hardest things they have ever done while camping, so well done to evryone for getting through a very difficult evening. 

A quick exit in the morning was followed by the second day's hike and a (relatively) midge-free lunch stop to fire up the trangias again.

Firelighting, den-building and muddy puddles with the Beavers

Life is slowly getting back to normal and Beavers have been meeting outdoors for quite a few weeks now. 

Recently they have been learning how to light fires (without matches), how to build their own dens, and how to jump up and down in muddy puddles!

Scout go climing

We normally go climing at Ratho, but this term this wasn't possible so we decided to branch out and try Glasgow Climbing Centre. It was great, loads of different walls to try, some great tuition, and they coped very well with our 24 Scouts. 

Bonfire night 2019

Bonfire night 2019 was a great success. As usual we had fantastic guys made by the Beavers, a huge bonfire, hotdogs and hot chocolate, and then great fireworks to finish off. Thanks to all our young members, leaders and parents for helping and supporting...and particular thanks to the Traffords and Fords for hosting us.

Cubs and Beavers at Barrwood - September 2019

The Cubs had a great camp at Barrwood last weekend...and they were visitied by the Beavers as well.

As usual there were loads of activities: making fires, practising making and using stretchers, kayaking on the reservoir, caving, and general exploring around Barrwood - including to the Ice Boulder. And of course some great food was cooked to make sure everyone had enough energy to do all these activities.

The Great Egg Drop 2019

This week the Scouts took part in the Great Egg Drop challenge. With very little equipment they had to protect an egg from being dropped out of the McLintock window onto the car park.

There were some interesting designs which looked a bit implausible but were very successful...even the egg wrapped in a necker seemed to survive.

The only failures were the two leaders' efforts, the spiky porcupine-like ones...both eggs smashed on impact.
